ben smith return with a raft of solo material after his debut release on nunorthern soul back in 2012. the movedrill projects saw ben weave between rock and folk roots and this latest projects sees ben push the folk sound he has become known and respected for. renown as a multi instrumentalist, b.j. smith is perhaps best known for his wonderful dedications to the greats release which have seen him cover mos def, the pharcyde and outkast in his own unique style, ben is also half of balearic super duo, smith & mudd and one third of white elephant with jim and chris from crazy p.

alr001 is tech-house based track features one late-night club cut of pure, padded brilliance. the original mix is a meditative, as it blissfully sways between softly thumping bass and euphoric synth snippets. hamburg based well known dj cess (formally from also known from cocoon booking) re-edited the track for dj s with a male spoken monologue that, despite being a tad pretentious, actually kind of weirdly works. fittingly, its the most dance floor appropriate of the bunch and would slip nicely into a bleary-eyed, 6am sunrise set.

deepblaks chief connoisseur could be considered as the third leg of this mighty tripod (with aybee and afrikan sciences). originally from san diego, where he and former crew partner ikah love held a residency for 6 consecutive years every tuesday at bar dynamite, under the famed name four corners sound system. known for his polyrhythmic, organic, and soul-filled musical releases for deepblak, sound of speed, meda fury and do over records he now presents his first full-length, which further grows his afro-inflected house vibe into spiky new directions featuring the compelling vocals of khalil anthony and some assistance from afrikan sciences.

last year s disco (a fine selection of independent disco, modern soul & boogie 1978-82) compilation from soul jazz offered undeniable proof that few diggers deserve their reputation as much as dutch discotheque scholar disco patrick. given the reception, it s no surprise to see that the london label have commissioned patrick to undertake a second assessment of the genre s lesser known gems with the focus here on the years 1976-80. the first of two double lp vinyl samplers to accompany the full cd release finds pat pulling out gems like the extremely pricey skip jackson curio micro wave boogie and t.k. disco treat cosmic funk by mad dog fire department.

can we melt the ice is one of those mystery records that collectors love so dearly. very little is known about it, other than that it appeared on plush records sometime around 1982 or 83. it was written and produced by chicago producer morris j williams, whose sweet vocal provides a vocal point for the track s sensual boogie vibes - all lilting horns, subtle synthesizers and shuffling grooves. brilliantly, this reissue from finlands constantly on-point traveller records also boasts a previously unreleased longer version, which naturally extends the tracks wonderful instrumentation in all the right places. recommended.

unless you have been sleeping it should be pretty obvious that wph head honcho red d has a weak spot for early belgian trance stuff. before trance was even known as trance that is… the early 90ies were the post new beat era in belgium and loads of producers were experimenting with new sounds to steer away from the blatantly commercial new beat chart stuff. so that is when the magic started happening.

after an 8 month long break, sylphe is back, this time changing things for the first time with a solo ep by the b side dweller, micawber. he is delivering two solid, thumping techno cuts in the well-known mystifying sylphe mood. on the a side we have * fasma*, a rolling, melancholic techno jam. sparkling rhythms meet lamenting melodies in a 10 minute trip of bubbly sub-basslines and transcendent grooves. on the usual b side micawber is delivering yenbashu. a psyched-out trip into electronics, it moves swiftly into an experimental territory of madness, full of edgy and shuffled up beats. both cuts remain true to the sound sylphe has forged, albeit taking a sharper turn and evolving naturally. we will be pressing 599 copies.
